The Riding
Chances are if you’ve read a mountain biking magazine or watched a mountain biking video recently, you’re familiar with the North Shore. The North Shore is widely regarded as the birthplace of freeriding. The terrain and trails on the North Shore are considered to be some of the toughest, most challenging trails in the world (in its June 2000 issue, Mountain Bike Magazine named the North Shore as the best riding spot ever). Originally developed to protect habitat, North Shore trailbuilders have become increasingly innovative and stunts, elevated boardwalks, log bridges, and teeter-totters are common on trails. The North Shore mountain biking community has worked proactively with land managers to ensure mountain biking trails are maintained and protected. Trailbuilders have built a huge network of trails, which range from intermediate to extreme. Check out the work of the North Shore Mountain Biking Association.

Mountain biking is concentrated on Mt Seymour and Mt Fromme, both located in North Vancouver. While there is a range of intermediate trails on the North Shore, there are limited cross-country riding opportunities.

The Destination
The North Shore is comprised of North Vancouver and West Vancouver, both suburbs of Vancouver (about 20 minutes drive from downtown). Located at the base of three mountains, the North Shore offers a huge range of recreational activities and tourism attractions including Grouse Mountain and the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Accommodation options range from modest motels to full service hotels and bed & breakfasts. There is a wide range of restaurants on the North Shore, including numerous pubs where mountain bikers congregate. Of course, the North Shore has a number of bike stores serving the mountain biking community check out www.johnhenrybikes.com, www.covebike.com, www.steedcycles.com, www.ontopbikeshop.com, www.dizzycycles.com

*It is important that you are aware that riding on the North Shore, in Squamish, and in Whistler is very different than what you may be used to. Due to the climate and topography of the Coast Mountain range, trails can be very steep and rugged. Be aware that the risk of injury is considerable.
